Opava – the “White Pearl” of Silesia
The town rich in its history, culture and sights has already celebrated 780 years since its origination. Since that time the town rich in its history, culture, sports and social life has grown from it. Among the most beautiful sights of the town the Gothic Cathedral of Assumption of the Virgin, the Minorite Monastery with the Holy Spirit Church from 13th century, Horní náměstí square with neo-Renaissance Watchtower and the building of the Silesian Theatre or Silesian Provincial Museum being the oldest museum of this kind in the territory of the Czech Republic, belong. Interesting buildings from the architectural viewpoint are also St. Hedvika’s Church or Breda Department Store. The undemanding sightseeing tour you can finish by a pleasant walk through town parks surrounding the centre of the town.
The tourist area of Opavian Silesia spreads out in the very heart of Moravia-Silesian Region. From formerly predominantly industry region where an important role especially metallurgical works and mines played, it is one of the greenest places of the Czech Republic with a number of tourist attractions.
Hradec nad Moravicí
Hradec nad Moravicí creates a gateway into the beautiful valley of the Moravice river and its landmark is a complex of White and Red Castles along with adjoining huge park. The older object so called the White Castle is located in a place of the Slavonic fortification from 8th century where Přemyslide prince’s castle was built in 11th – 13th centuries. It was rebuilt to the Renaisance Castle with an ornamental garden at the end of 16th century. It acquired the present Empire appearance after a fire in 1796. In 19th century also other objects were built – White Tower, fortification wall with a terrace and the Red Castle inspired by castle constructions of the German Middle Ages. The castle park is completed by English park formed in the year 1796.
Famous guests like L. van Beethoven, W. A. Mozart, F. Liszt, N. Paganini, J. Mánes resided at the Castle in former times. In honour of a famous composer the competition of young pianists and violinist “Beethoven’s Hradec” takes place.
The Raduň Castle is situated in the place of a citadel mentioned already in 15th century when the village was owned by noblemen from Raduň. Fabulously looking Castle, whom the present appearance was given by famous Tarkovský and Larisch-Mönich dynasties, creates with neighbouring ponds and nature sceneries an unforgettable atmosphere. Interiors of the Castle are equipped from art-historical movables of the Castle in Hradec nad Moravicí. Tourist attractions of the Castle are sheep-fold, orangery or Rennaisance granaries. Visitors can also catch sight of a former private suite of members of Blüncher dynasty, valuable castle library with almost 16 000 volumes and lovely adjoining park.
High Baroque Castle dated to 18th century and its part is also Archangel Michael Chapel with a monumental ceiling fresco and beautiful altar. The fresco is a work by F. I. Eckstein, one of main representatives of Baroque wall painting in Moravia and Silesia. In Castle interiors besides a rich stucco decorations also museum collection dealing with the town and surroundings will attract. The Castle is surrounded by a large natural landscape park.
Castle in Velké Hoštice
The Castle dated to the year 1754 was originally built in late Baroque however in a half of 19 century it went through extensive renovation to today Classicist appearance. Round the Castle a castle 2.9-hectare park is situated.
Castle Golf Club in Kravaře
The Castle Golf Club in Kravaře is sensitively embedded into the English park round the Baroque Castle; and centuries-old trees and many water flows determine the unique character of this playground. At present its extension take place from 9-holes to 18-holes golf course being destined not only to professionals but especially those who wants to try this attractive sport.
Nature Trail Hvozdnice
An undemanding four-kilometres long walk for knowledge of beauties of last rest of a flooded forest in Opavian region is a walking target not only of inhabitants of Slavkov community, but also lovers of nature from wide surroundings.
15 stops inform on botany, zoology and geological conditions. The trial is prolonged to a mixed forest to the south of Čertice where visitors can use picnic areas and children playgrounds.
Area of Fortification in Darkovičky
It is an European highly reputable presentation of the unique fortification system of our republic. This totally renovated fortification „Alej“ is not only a museum, but also a part of a military outdoor museum. Information on various structural designs of objects with all possibilities of armour used at infantry pillboxes wait for visitors here. Annually demonstrations of combat operations and commemorative actions take place. All objects are interconnected by the nature trial in this area.
Lookout Tower Sance in Jakubčovice
15,5 meters high lookout tower is located in the altitude of 522 meters. The lookout tower has been inaugurated on 29 Appril, 2005 in Jakubčovice near Hradec nad Moravicí on the occasion of 60th anniversary of ending the World War II. When overcoming 61 stairs you have a view of picturesque town of Opava and its level valley, but also peaks of Jeseníky and Beskydy Mountains.
Arboretum in Nový Dvůr
The local arboretum is a part of the Silesian Provincial Museum. In facilities of former castle park an exposition offering visitors the unique collection has grown up. Its foundation is a rich collection of domestic and exotic species, subtropical and tropical plants, representatives of species and herbs from all continents of the world. The rich collection is called by right “Species of Five Continents”.
Wooden Windmill in Choltice and Hlavnice
Visit the wooden windmill in Choltice of sheep or goat type that was transported to Choltice by Frantiąek Romfeld in 1878 from near-by Sádek. In the flour chest there is a collection of hatchet tools and various needs used in homestead and household of our ancestors.
A wooden corn mill like that so called of German type from the year 1810, round which several wooden buildings within the outdoor museum are situated, is located also in nearby Hlavnice. In the mill a small collection of hatchet tools and needs for homestead was created.
